Building adaptive intelligence for the real world

OSSI is developing brain-inspired computing for robotics and autonomous systems. Our ambition is to help machines respond to changing conditions while making better use of their available computing power and energy.

We are highly commercially focused: already working with pilot customers, with our build programme underway and a clear focus on progressing towards proof-of-concept customer engagements.

The real world keeps changing

Imagine a warehouse robot moving between a brightly lit aisle and a shadowed loading area. It encounters an unfamiliar object, then an operating condition that differs from the one it was designed around. It is a simple illustration of the changing conditions that robotics developers need to plan for.

For the people building such machines, these changes are practical challenges. A robot has limited computing capacity and energy available, yet must deal with information from a world that does not stand still. That tension is part of the reason we are developing OSSI.

02

Our approach

Neuromorphic computing is computing inspired by the way biological nervous systems process information. It offers a different starting point for thinking about how machines handle activity from their surroundings.

Event-driven processing means computation responds to incoming activity. Rather than treating every moment as the same, this approach asks when and where processing is needed. We are exploring how these ideas can support robotics and autonomous systems within practical computing and energy limits.

Efficiency and adaptability are development aims. Defined evaluations will help establish performance and guide what comes next.

03

Built around commercial needs

OSSI is already working with pilot customers, and our build programme has begun. These are concurrent activities: commercial conversations and development inform one another as we progress towards proof-of-concept (POC) customer engagements.

A POC is a focused evaluation against a specific customer problem, with clear objectives and measures. It creates a way to ask useful questions: what matters in this application, what should be tested, and what evidence would help a customer decide on a next step?

Our commercial focus keeps those questions close to the development process. We are building towards defined evaluations that can establish what is useful in practice, with clear objectives and measures for each engagement.

Our progress and next steps

  1. Underway

    Working with pilot customers

Already engaging with pilot customers around practical applications. These conversations help us understand where a different approach to computing could be useful, and what a meaningful evaluation would need to address.

  2. Underway

    Advancing the build programme

Development has begun alongside commercial activity. The build programme and pilot customer work move forward together, allowing practical needs to inform development rather than waiting until the end of the process.

  3. Next commercial focus

    Progressing towards POC customers

Defined customer evaluations with clear objectives and measures. Our focus is on shaping specific problems into focused engagements that can generate useful evidence and guide the next development decisions.

  4. Longer-term aim

    Developing towards integration

Evaluation results would inform further development and potential integration into customer platforms. This remains a longer-term aim, shaped by what evaluations show and by the requirements of each potential application.

Research, simulation and testing support this development journey. Performance claims will depend on the evidence generated through the relevant evaluations.
